This review is for the 3D and the extended cut version of this film. This film is very slow getting started, much like Lord of the Rings series. However, these movies are extremely good and the extended cuts show extras that weren’t included in the theatrical release of the film. This film is very watchable for a first time and even a second time through, because you will miss things and catch them in the second viewing of this film.
Let’s get some of the bad and ugly things out of the way about this film. This is a very long film coming in about 3 hours long and the extended cut is even longer. So, watching a 3D movie for 3 hours can be hard. The movie, however, is extremely good, so its length is really the only major drawback we have against the film. A small gripe with the film is the storyline takes a while to really get going.
Here are few things that you should know about the Blu-ray release of the film we are reviewing. The 3D Blu-ray extended cut of the movie comes on 2 Blu-rays with half the movie on each disc. There is also a Blu-ray disc with the theatrical release of the film. There are an additional 2 DVD’s included in this set which are appendices to the film. This is very similar to the extended cuts for The Lord of the Rings series.
For those who are unaware, the Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins as he embarks on a journey with dwarfs in order to reclaim the kingdom they were chased out of when the dragon Smaug invaded. The first movie focuses on how the group was formed that will venture to reclaim their lost kingdom. It also features Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, who as the leader appoints Bilbo’s home as the meeting place to start the journey. The dwarfs are led by the Prince Thorin whose mission is to reclaim the throne from the evil Smaug. Along the way they encounter danger in the form of orcs and various other perilous challenges as they proceed on their journey. Bilbo’s role is to be the burglar for the group. His specific role is to break into the mountain where Smaug has his lair. This movie takes you through their travels just before the troupe reaches Smaug’s mountain.
I really enjoyed The Hobbit, an unexpected journey. The film was extremely watchable, and once the journey actually began, filled with action and adventure. I have enjoyed watching this film for a second and third time as well. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea due to its length, but I suspect many will love it as much as I have. I recommend this film to anyone who really enjoys action/adventure/fantasy type films. We highly recommend this film for even young children. It is rated PG-13, and lacks any swearing, foul language or gratuitous violence. If someone could compare this movie to The Hobbit book we would much enjoy reading how well you feel the film was to the book itself.
Thank you for reading.
